Can you get me out of my lease?

I have often come across a customer asking me to get them out of a lease, this is a very difficult situation. Sneaky salesman will often try to “lock in” a customer into a 5 year lease, by doing this, they lock up that customer for five years and even if the company goes out of business, you are stuck with the lease payment. I have been doing this for 27 years, when you are in a lease and if your service provider goes out of business or if the machine fails miserably, you are still stuck with the lease.

Is there anyway to get out of the lease? Yes & No

The salesman can get you out of the lease by asking for a buyout from your leasing company, after the leasing company gives that amount, lets say $4500.00, the salesman will take that amount and add it into the cost of the new copier, he will then try and get you into another five year lease to reduce the monthly payment. You will pay dearly for this!

You have been reading my posts for a while now, you know what to expect, they’re  are so many customers still out there that get burned by the greedy salesman.

Never go into a five year lease, never!

If you are going to lease, it should be maximum of three years FMV (fair market value)

There is such thing as a dollar buy out lease, which means at the end of the three years, the machine can be bought for $1.00. I recommend this type lease only if you trust the selection of equipment selected by your current company. Remember, if it is a troublesome machine, you bought it. Only trust a technician who is a veteran in the business to make this selection. Salesman only sell, that is what they are good at and 95% of them only know the brochure and nothing regards to actual service history. Quite honest, most salesman are full of BS.

I would also only recommend a dollar buy out lease with a customer doing low to medium copy volume. If you do high volume, lets say 150k copies a year on a 30 cpm copier, then you should not do a dollar buyout. The reason is, in three years you will have at least 450k copies or better, that meter count is very close to what the copier life expectancy is. Remember, I am not a Snake oil salesman, I am telling you the facts coming from a veteran copier technician of 27 years.

Now, if your yearly volume is 60k, then yes! dollar buyout and keep the machine for 6 plus years!

Use Cartridge World or other crap toners in your copiers and expect a charge call from your local copier/printer dealer.

He bought the cartridge from Cartridge World on 10/23/13, it was almost full and he now needs to go out and get an OEM because I scolded him. $109.00 for Cartridge world garbage plus $159.00 for genuine Canon = $268.00 plus our $105.00= $373.00 plus tax

Copy / print overages still a big concern!!

As competition gets more aggressive and as the business world goes more and more into paperless, the snake oil copier salesman gets more desperate.

We have discussed overages in the past, in fact not to long ago, but I feel it is important to reiterate this. I went out on two proposals this week alone that the customers was fed up with the overages. When I go out on a call like this I play detective, I am not just another salesman in a three piece suit looking to score his next vacation on your dime, I am a master technician of more than 26 years, I also have a very good personality and am honest and trustworthy.

I will visit your site, I will physically go to your copier/printer and print out the usage counters and sit down with you and show you what you do as far as copying and printing, we will discuss your future copying/printing and then, I will be able to pinpoint an accurate calculation of your yearly/monthly clicks. I am so confident in my system that we will if you go over it,we WILL NOT CHARGE YOU FOR IT!.

Now this is the trick that the snake oil salesmans do NOT want you to find out !  I have mentioned it at least two times in prior blogs and I ran across it twice this week alone!

With competition this fierce in a stagnant economy, at least in New York, Long Island it is….  The salesman will do everything and anything to make a sale, he/she wants to go on vacation badly and his wife is due for a new Lexis ;-), they are purposely going in and under estimating your volume!, this in return will give you a lower lease/contract price, they do not do this to everyone, just the ones who do significant volume. After you sign the lease or the contract that clearly says OVERAGES ARE TO BE BILLED AT .0125, that’s it, you signed and are bind to that! This in return can be thousands of dollars a year!, not hundreds but thousands!  

Some readers have said to me in the past, “aren’t you a little harsh on the copier salesman”, I am not saying all salesman are snake oil salesman, not at all, but I have seen a lot in action, every week when we go out on calls we hear the horror stories and I am sick of it, I am sick of dishonest people ruining the business, I do not like corruption and I see it in the copier sales business.

Bottom line here folks, if you are getting bills for overages and it is happening more then once and you know nothing unusual has happened to reflect an increase like this, then you need to open your eyes.

 

It is not that hard folks, all machines have counters/meters, divide that by how many months you have your machine, it is as simple as that!!

Damp copier paper cause jamming & CQ issues

With the Summer months upon us, with high humidity comes issues with the paper you load in your machines, I can try to save you money here $$$, if all of a sudden, your copier or printer will not feed paper or it jams…. first thing you should do is take out the paper in the tray, put it aside and NEATLY open up a ream of fresh paper, I say NEATLY so after you take what you need, you can properly close the package up to ensure dampness keeps out! Now that you have the “fresh” paper in your hands, fan the paper out and install it into the machine and run a test. If she feeds fine then you know it was the paper. Remember that it only takes 15 minutes for humidity to set in. I have customer who call us on Monday morning and say the copier is jamming, I ask them if the ac is on and they tell me yes, I ask them was it turned down or off over the weekend and they say Uhmm, yes… well there you go.

Not only does damp paper/humidity cause jamming but it also causes copy quality issues, you will never get good solid black print with damp paper! it will appear spotty, washed out looking. A washed out copy is a very good indication that you have a paper issue, again, take paper out and install fresh paper from a package. Never take paper out of the package and pile it on the shelf, its just inviting troubles. Taking the proper steps in preventing paper issues will save you money and more important,will keep your equipment up for your business.
